How to plan for special needs funding in 2025

On Behalf of Hickman Lowder | Feb 25, 2025 | Firm News

Managing your special needs funding can be complicated. That is particularly true, considering the recent uncertainties surrounding government benefits. If you worry about potential benefit changes affecting your loved one, it’s crucial to act.

By being aware and taking initiative, you can stand a better chance at providing your loved one with what they need while remaining financially stable. Here’s is what you can do to plan effectively:

Understand your current funding and budget

First, look at your current expenses, income, and funding sources. Identify what programs you benefit from, such as SNAP, housing aid, and social services. By taking a thorough inventory, you can better understand where you stand financially and what areas of your budget may need more attention.

Identify potential changes

Next, determine which budget items could be subject to change. Keep up with recent news related to government benefits. You can also call service lines and inquire about the stability of their funding. Also, knowing whether the state or federal government backs your financing can provide you with valuable insights.

Research alternative funding resources

If a state or federal program no longer offers the funding you need, alternative funding could be available. The more specific you are in your search, the better. For example, finding financing for occupational therapy might be easier than seeking broad-service funding. Many nonprofits offer services that align with your needs. That way, you can still get access to specific resources without having to break your budget.

Seek help from your community

Non-governmental resources, such as churches, parent groups, non-profit organizations and neighborhood organizations, often have collective resources that can bridge gaps in uncertain times. These networks can be invaluable in providing support and assistance.

Appeal changes

If you face any changes to your funding, remember that you have the right to appeal. Don’t hesitate to file an appeal, as this can bring your case before an administrative law judge who will reassess your eligibility and any budget adjustments. Taking this step can sometimes reverse unfavorable changes.

By being proactive, you can maneuver the uncertainties and complexities of special needs funding more easily. This will ensure your loved ones continue receiving the care and support they need.
