Estate Planning: It Is Never Too Late Or Too Early

Last updated on October 22, 2025

Whether you are in your 40s or your 80s, you’ve worked hard to get where you are. Have you considered what will happen to your assets, or who will make important decisions, if something should happen to you? If not, it’s never too late – or too early – to think about creating an estate plan.

Every day, we meet people who have unexpectedly lost their health or somebody close to them. That’s why we promote the idea that basic estate planning is important to consider while you’re still relatively young, healthy and clear-headed. The best time to create your estate plan is when disability, dementia, and death are the furthest things from your mind.

Planning Your Estate

Planning your estate means drafting wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and other legal documents that will activate your own wishes down the line when you are not here, or not able, to manage them yourself.

Our guidance can help you:

  • Control who will receive your assets after your death;
  • Minimize legal fees and taxes;
  • Protect yourself in the event you become incapacitated so that you, through the individuals you choose, not the courts, keep control of your assets and make decisions about your medical care the way you predetermine.

Why The Hickman Lowder Lidrbauch & Welch Co., L.P.A. Perspective Is Unique

Because we have so much experience working with accident survivors and others who live with permanent disabilities, our practice enables us to imagine the big picture in ways other attorneys often do not. A thorough estate plan is designed to ensure that your decisions about your medical care and your property are carried out. We ask you the hard questions that will enable others to properly advocate for your care, secure your family, and protect your finances if a crisis occurs.

It’s easy to put off your estate plan – until the “if” that rarely enters your mind becomes an “if only” on the lips of your loved ones. Let’s get started today. Read our estate planning FAQ page.
