Resources for elder abuse and exploitation in northeast Ohio

On Behalf of Hickman Lowder | Feb 26, 2025 | Elder Law

Elder abuse is a serious issue affecting many older adults. It includes physical, emotional and sexual abuse, as well as financial exploitation and neglect. Elder abuse can happen anywhere, including in the home, nursing homes or other care facilities. Unfortunately, many cases go unreported, making it difficult to know the true extent of the problem. In the United States, about 10% of adults over 60 experience some form of abuse each year. Elder abuse not only harms the victim physically and emotionally but can also lead to financial ruin and social isolation.

Common Signs of Elder Abuse

Recognizing the signs of elder abuse is crucial in protecting our loved ones. Here are some common signs to watch for:

  • Physical abuse: Look for bruises, scars or burns that cannot be explained. These may be signs of physical abuse. Multiple trips to the emergency room can also indicate ongoing abuse.
  • Emotional abuse: If an older adult suddenly becomes withdrawn or shows signs of depression, they may be experiencing emotional abuse. Visitors should look for signs of fear or anxiety around specific individuals.
  • Financial exploitation: Large withdrawals or sudden changes in bank accounts are red flags. Valuable personal items or cash that disappears without a reasonable explanation may also indicate financial exploitation.
  • Neglect: Visitors should look for poor personal hygiene, dirty clothing or untreated medical conditions. It can also involve unsafe living conditions, such as a lack of heat, electricity or running water.

Recognizing these signs early on can help prevent further abuse and ensure the safety of elderly individuals.
