Five tips to help special needs children transition from school to the workplace

On Behalf of Hickman Lowder | May 7, 2025 | Children With Special Needs

Transitioning from high school or school-based care to the workplace and adult services can be a challenging time for families of special needs children. In Ohio, this transition involves not just potentially starting a new job but also navigating a new system of social services, which can be both logistically and emotionally demanding.

Ohio law allows students with disabilities to remain in the school system until age 21. As they approach this age, it is wise to begin planning for the transition to the workplace and adult services. Parents should familiarize themselves with the available resources and legal requirements to ensure a smooth transition. Tips that help include the following:

  1. Start early: Begin planning for the transition before your child leaves school. Early preparation allows time to explore options and make informed decisions. When it comes to entering the workplace, studies show that having a paid job while in school greatly increases the likelihood of the student obtaining competitive employment after leaving the school setting.
  2. Develop a transition plan: Collaborate with your child’s school to create a comprehensive transition plan. This plan should outline goals, services, and the support needed for your child’s future.
  3. Explore adult services: Research available adult services in your area. Ohio offers various programs, including vocational training, supported employment, and independent living services.
  4. Understand legal rights: Familiarize yourself with your child’s legal rights under Ohio law. This includes understanding eligibility criteria for services and how to advocate for your child’s needs.
  5. Build a support network: Connect with other families and professionals who can offer guidance and support. A strong network can provide valuable insights and resources.

Transitioning from school-based care to adult services requires careful planning and understanding of Ohio’s legal framework. By applying these tips parents can help better ensure their special needs children transition smoothly. Navigating social services is an essential part of this process, and with the right approach, families can set themselves up to receive the support they need for a successful future.
